Customer.io for healthcare and telehealth.

Customer.io is one of the few lifecycle platforms built for event-driven messaging that also supports HIPAA on its higher plans. That combination makes it a strong fit for cash-pay telehealth.

Here is how we set it up for healthcare brands.

Why it fits telehealth

Telehealth lifecycle runs on events: intake started, approved, shipped, payment failed, refill due. Customer.io is built around exactly that model. Every flow starts from an event your storefront, Stripe, or partner systems send, and branches on what the patient does next.

The plan question

Customer.io lists HIPAA compliance on its Premium and Enterprise plans. Premium starts around $1,000 a month billed yearly; the entry Essentials plan does not include HIPAA. If your messages draw on health information, budget for the HIPAA tier from day one and confirm the BAA during the sales process.

Provido is not affiliated with any vendor named here. Plans, pricing, and BAA terms change, so confirm current terms with the vendor before you sign. This is how we build, not legal advice.

How we structure it

  1. Events, not lists. Send clean events with generic names and only the attributes each flow needs.
  2. Keep clinical detail minimal. A flow that reminds a patient to refill needs a refill date, not a diagnosis.
  3. Separate consent. Marketing SMS consent tracked apart from care and transactional messages.
  4. Neutral previews. No medication or condition names in subject lines or SMS previews.
  5. Stripe events for money. Failed payments and renewals come straight from Stripe webhooks.

Flows to build first

Where AI fits

Customer.io includes send-time optimization, AI content tools, an AI segment builder, an AI agent in beta, and LLM actions that call a language model inside a workflow. We use those LLM actions to plug in our own Claude agents for churn scoring, message selection, and reply triage, so the decisions run on your rules instead of generic defaults. Common questions

Straight answers

Is Customer.io HIPAA compliant?
Customer.io lists HIPAA compliance on its Premium and Enterprise plans, not on Essentials. Confirm the BAA and plan terms with Customer.io before sending any protected health information.
How much does Customer.io cost for healthcare?
The HIPAA-capable Premium plan starts around $1,000 a month billed yearly, with pricing that scales by profiles and volume. Enterprise is custom.
Customer.io or Klaviyo for telehealth?
Klaviyo is built for ecommerce and does not offer a BAA. Telehealth brands whose messages use health information generally choose a platform that does, such as Customer.io on its HIPAA tiers.
Can Customer.io send SMS?
Yes. Many healthcare brands pair it with a HIPAA-eligible SMS setup such as Twilio under a BAA. See the Twilio guide.
